Status quo budget for education + increasing costs for school districts = cuts to kids

There is no money in the provincial budget announced today to address the learning needs of students in BC’s schools, address increasingly untenable workloads for teachers, or to address the real cost of running school districts across BC. In fact, the “status quo” budget announced by Finance Minister Colin Hansen translates into cuts to student services given that downloaded costs to school districts from last year remain unfunded, full-day kindergarten is only being partially funded, and other school district costs are increasing.

Education continues to have a diminished share of the provincial budget, a trend over the past 15 years, and BC is lagging behind other provinces in terms of its commitment to public education and supports for vulnerable children.
