City of Vancouver exceeds target for new childcare

At today’s Childcare Month celebration, Mayor Gregor Robertson announced that the City of Vancouver has surpassed its three-year target for creating new childcare spaces.

With seven months remaining, the City has already surpassed its three-year target for creating 500 new childcare spaces in Vancouver, with a total of 599 City-facilitated spaces built or committed since 2012.

Since 2009, the City has invested $62 million into childcare, facilitating the creation of 975 new childcare spaces, with 751 built, and an additional 224 committed.

“The City is committed to investing in childcare as a way to improve early childhood education and make Vancouver more affordable for young families,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “Too many Vancouver families struggle every day to find affordable childcare, which puts a strain on hard-working parents and grandparents in our city.”

“By investing in childcare, we’re expanding opportunities for our kids and making Vancouver a more inclusive city to live in. We are pleased to be making a significant contribution to creating new childcare spaces, and by continuing to work with our partners, we’ll keep building on this progress,” added Mayor Robertson.

A $5 million surplus in the City’s 2012 budget was invested into the Childcare Reserve to support the affordability of infant and toddler care, as they are the most in need on the childcare spectrum. This was the largest one-time investment in childcare in the City’s history…
