Improvements needed in child care development

The third annual State of the Child report was recently released for the central Okanagan.

The report, compiled by the Community Action Toward Children’s Health, provides a snapshot of how the region is doing in the area of child development.

One area of concern is that 25 per cent of local children entering kindergarten are considered behind in either language, cognitive, social, emotional or physical development.

The report found daycare accessibility in the central Okanagan is improving.

150 new licensed spaces were created in the past year; there are now a total of 3,700 spaces in the area.

However, the Kelowna Child Care Society says triple that amount is needed to meet demand.
