Children’s rights are the responsibility of all British Columbians

November 20 marks National Children’s Day in Canada, but it also marks 19 years since the government of Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, obligating Canada to promote, implement, protect, and monitor the rights of children. The UNCRC has been adopted by every country in the world except for two: the U.S. and Somalia.
The UNCRC is an international treaty that sets out a wide range of rights for children and requirements for governments in promoting and protecting those rights. Children are guaranteed rights to life, survival, development; to have their best interests looked after; to be meaningfully engaged, all without discrimination of any kind.
