Back to school—all day

The countdown has started and in less than a week Alberni Valley children will be streaming through the doors into schools for their first day of classes.

And in School District 70 all-day kindergarten classes for 170 children are starting for the first time district wide….

The program was categorized as a pilot project when it was first announced but it looks like it’s here to stay, Pinkerton said.

All-day kindergarten isn’t something new in the Alberni Valley.

“Eighth Avenue School and Bamfield school have aboriginal all-day kindergartens so we do have some experience from the district to draw on.”

Another pilot project could be in the offing.

“We’re anticipating coming down with a program for three- and four-year-olds,” Pinkerton said.

“It would be much along the lines of our Strong Start centres, which are showing a lot of success.”….
