With the new school year fast approaching, several established child care facilities are noticing a decrease in enrollment.
Vision Vancouver School Trustee Sharon Gregson -- who also works in the field -- says for-profit centres are having an impact, "Childcare is being marketed as junior kindergarten, and makes parents believe there is some kind of enhanced school readiness or enhanced early learning that happens. Whereas my position as a childcare advocate is young children need to learn through play."
Gregson says early learning should be publicly funded just like other education, so parents don't get gouged for childcare.
