Full-day kindergarten welcome

Despite forcing school districts across the province, including our own district, to make deep cuts in order to balance their budgets, the province has done the right thing in following through on its commitment for full-day kindergarten…
We applaud the move, because you can never have too much learning, especially in younger children. We know from the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy that reading and learning are lifelong skills, and the sooner our children can be introduced to both, the better.
A full day will also introduce young students to the idea of spending the whole day in school a year earlier.
And, of course, it’s a benefit to families with two working parents, who will not have to pay for child care for that school year.
It’s unfortunate that school districts have had to cut to meet budgets this year, and we hope the government follows through on its announcement of renovations and new classroom space with enough funding.
Full-day kindergarten should be a positive thing for students and their families; not another burden on the school district.
