B.C. tightens belt in budget, threatens thousands of jobs

….The province moved to placate angry school boards by restoring $110 million in annual grants used to repair school buildings. It also provided $112 million in new education funding, to a total of $4.66 billion, to cover salary increases and the cost of all-day kindergarten, which starts in September. The B.C. Teachers' Federation said that doesn't come near the $300 million needed to prevent layoffs and school closings. Hansen brushed aside the criticism and said school districts need to find efficiencies….
A pledge to help low and moderate-income families afford child care turned out to be a $26 million top-up to an existing service that won't help more families….
