…. That brings us to Child Care Support for Families. Budget 2010 provides an additional $26 million over the next three years to support child care programs that assist low and moderate income families with the cost of child care. That is just over $8 million a year. If you divide that between the 48.4 per cent of all taxpayers who earn below $30,000 per year in B.C., you can pretty definitively say that this is not the budget that will see BC lose its position in Canada as the jurisdiction with the highest child poverty rate.
Carol James criticized the budget for not addressing the issue of poverty in the province. "The budget failed to address the growing social inequality we’ve seen under the B.C. Liberals. There was nothing in this budget to address child poverty, the growing income gap, or lack of affordable housing," she said.
