Trustees debate benefits of full-day kindergarten: Some argue current plan doesn't give all five-year-olds the same opportunities

Some school trustees are proposing alternatives to a government plan for fullday kindergarten in order to give all children the same opportunities.
Under the current plan, half of B.C.'s five-year-olds will have access to full-day kindergarten starting in September, while the other half will remain in half-day kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year.
Full-day kindergarten won't be universally available in the province until September 2011.
Rick Price, chair of the Sea to Sky board of education, said he and his colleagues don't like the idea of accommodating some children while turning others away, especially since evidence suggests the majority of families in the district are hoping for full-day kindergarten this fall.
