…District director of instruction Mary-Anne Smirle updated school trustees at their last meeting about the province's plans to bring in full-day kindergarten for more five-year-olds starting in the fall of 2010.
"We know for many of our families this will be welcome news," she said…. "There can be no capital expenditures in this stage," Smirle said….
There are other factors to take into consideration such as the possibility of displacing students from StrongStart or community child care programs. When all criteria are taken into account, Chilliwack has a number of schools that should be eligible for the full-day kindergarten program.
"We believe that we have eight schools that meet all the criteria," Smirle said, adding another five meet all the criteria except for having an existing on-site child care program….
A full-day district committee will then work on an implementation plan to have all schools that do not offer full-day kindergarten next September working towards bringing in the program for the 2011-2012 school year.
