More school space, please

All-day kindergarten. School readiness programs such as StrongStart.--The government-spawned ideas area worthwhile, says Trustee Terry Allen, but Surrey is running out of physical space to put the programs and is at risk of becoming awash in more portables.

Allen presented a notice of motion last week to fellow Surrey Board of Education members asking that the chairperson contact the Minister of Education, Minister of Finance and local MLAs to stress “the urgent need for additional school classroom infrastructure” in Surrey….

Surrey has grown by more than 2,700 students and is expected to continue to grow for several years. Allen’s motion says portables are a temporary solution only, are less energy efficient and that Surrey hasn’t received approval for new building projects since the 2005/06 capital plan….
