Federal budget must address child care and economic slowdown
Aug 19 '09
The BCGEU says the federal government must make supporting workers, fighting poverty, and providing more child care the top priorities in next year's budget.
The union submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Finance, which is the House of Common's body in charge of consulting with the public about next year's federal budget.
The BCGEU is encouraging the federal government to maintain a stimulus approach this year, and to emphasize equity and sustainability. For example, the union calls for more federal funding for a public child care system, construction of affordable housing, and "Green Job" creation. The union also recommends EI reform, improvements to the Canada Pension Plan, and more access to training.
