Skater hits road for child care

Bret Hernando doesn’t want governments skating around the issue of child care.

To make a point, and to raise awareness of his vision of a national child care system, the 25-year-old Hernando is inline skating his way around the province this summer ….The Vancouver-based child care worker wheeled into Vernon this week, stopping at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club to chat with kids and discuss his tour with club workers.

“I know the ins and outs of problems with child care because I’ve been a child care worker for five or six years,” said Hernando.

“In my first year of early childhood education training, I was so shocked to find out in Canada there is no system for child care. It’s my belief that the lack of a system is the root of all the problems in child care.”…

 “Whatever choice of child care the parents make, that’s what I’m skating for,” said Hernando.

… Hernando said Quebec is the only province or territory in Canada that has stepped up for child care. He wants the rest of the country to follow suit.

“No matter how good our child care has been to all of us, it still has not been good enough,” Hernando said on his website, www.inlinewithchildcare.ca.

“That is why we often hear and experience some of its serious problems. That is why Canada is always ranked below many other first-world countries when it comes to child care and learning. That is why our child care does not get all of the people’s support." …
