… Farmworkers in B.C. had experienced a long and continuing history of government neglect and legislative inequality. In February 1983, the BC Human Rights Commission described the working and living conditions of farmworkers in this province as "systemic discrimination" and a form of "legislative racism."… Farmworkers and the union continue to fight today for the abolition of the contract labour system, minimum wage and maximum hours of work for farmworkers, and an end to discriminatory employment insurance regulations. They are also seeking protection against exposure to pesticides, dangerous machinery and the provision of daycare for the children of farm-workers….
