If you're hoping to find a preschool spot for September, you might be too late. Get in line for 2010. Parents who got on the list two years ago -- or at conception -- have snapped up most of what's available for this fall.

My approach to the great preschool hunt was characteristically blasé, which is why I was left scrambling for a space in the last few weeks.

"What the heck," I told a woman I'd just met. "It's only preschool, right?"

She gave me a funny look. "I taught preschool for 20 years," she said. Oops.

… Then a co-worker recommended … Preschool in Fernwood. When I called, …didn't have space, of course, although she invited me to get in line for the fall -- of 2010….
