Whistler Question

WHISTLER – The Whistler Children’s Centre Society (WCSS), which last fall discontinued two of its child-care programs run out of the Spring Creek campus because of limited funding and lack of sufficient staff, this week announced it was closing the facility altogether. The closure decision, made at the WCCS board’s Feb. 16 meeting, takes effect on Friday (Feb. 27), the board announced in a statement dated Saturday (Feb. 21) …

….However, the board said it recognizes that the closure will be a hardship on some families.

“Families who rely on child care in order to work in Whistler now have less service, less choice and less flexibility,” the statement said, adding that reactions from parents affected by the move ranged from dismay to empathy for the board’s situation….

“Even with sufficient licensed staff, we would require facility renovations in order to re-open the Spring Creek location as two of the classrooms are not large enough to be economically viable. Sub-leasing space in the interim would allow us to cover the modest costs involved with keeping Spring Creek for future use,” it said.
