The new Vancouver board of education is getting down to business this week and one of the first items in line for attention is a policy that prohibits the use of classroom space for child-care programs.

A board committee will vote Tuesday on a proposal to change this policy:

“As school populations are dynamic, it is difficult to accurately access the short and long term enrolling space needs in Vancouver schools. It is also  difficult to find alternative accommodation for child care programs in the short term. For these reasons, it is inappropriate to use classroom space in Vancouver schools for child care programs.”

To this:

“As school populations are dynamic, it is difficult to accurately access the short and long term enrolling space needs in Vancouver schools. It is also difficult to find alternative accommodation for child care programs in the short term. For these reasons, classroom space in Vancouver schools shall be available on an annual basis for child care programs.”

The committee's agenda shows that Kitchener and Selkirk elementary are among schools calling for the change.
