MLA urges immediate investment

With the economy bottoming out, now is the time to invest in Campbell River, says North Island MLA Claire Trevena….

"There's no getting away from it, we are still a resource-based community," she said. "It's been a very tough 2008 for many people with what's been going on in the forest sector and other resource industries."

Struggling resource industries will mean struggling families, who might have to move out of the community to find new jobs.

"Without young families we start having serious problems," she said.

She said that's why now is also the time for the government to build infrastructure projects in struggling communities such as Campbell River.

"Show some commitment by investing in communities outside the Lower Mainland. By doing so it's showing you have faith in those communities," she said. "That's what our communities need. They need to know that people believe in them."

Trevena suggested several forms of investment, from a built-in-B.C. expanded ferry system to a provincial child care plan to government-funded social housing.

"It's a very good investment in our future," she said. …
