VANCOUVER - Vancouver's Shelagh Day, an international authority on women's human rights, was honoured Friday at a special ceremony in Ottawa for her outstanding contributions to the advancement of women in Canada.
Day was among the six Canadians named as recipients of this year's Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case. …."The Government of Canada is pleased to recognize those extraordinary Canadians who work tirelessly towards the full participation of women in the social, economic and democratic life of Canada," Helena Guergis, newly appointed Minister of State for the Status of Women, said in a press release.
Day's involvement in women's rights span over three decades. She is a founding president of the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), editor of the Canadian Human Rights Reporter and has co-author of two books and numerous articles on women's equality rights.
She also works internationally, appearing on behalf of Canadian women before United Nations treaty bodies when they are examining Canada's compliance with its international human rights obligations.
"I have incredible respect for Shelagh for just continuing on. She articulates the issues so well and is so deeply committed and passionate about women's issues in Canada. It's so inspirational," said Alison Brewin, executive director West Coast LEAF in Vancouver.
By recognizing Day, "[the government] recognizes that this is important work to be done," said Brewin….
