Two Prince Rupert residents have taken on the role of coordinators to lead community support for the early years of child development in Prince Rupert.

…. Success By 6 in BC is a joint initiative of United Ways, Credit Unions, the BC Government through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), and community leaders. The initiative is dedicated to ensuring that children ages 0 to 6 have access to programs and supports that help ensure healthy growth and development. Success By 6 builds community through engaging citizens in early childhood development and funding programs that include literacy, nutrition, children’s play, parenting and family skills development. …Early childhood development is a critical issue for Prince Rupert, as 48.7 per cent, almost one in two children entering kindergarten, have some form of vulnerability to their future social development. Back in April, Joanne Schroeder from the Human Early Learning Partnership presented the results of the 2007 EDI (Early Development Instrument), and said children are becoming more vulnerable across the province.

However, Prince Rupert had the third-highest level of vulnerability in the province in the 2007 study, with Haida Gwaii ranking second highest at 51.9 per cent and Gold Trail the highest at 54.1 per cent.
