VICTORIA - Child care minister Linda Reid's claim that she has already delivered everything the child care sector has asked for demonstrates just how out of touch the Campbell government is from the reality facing B.C. families, say the New Democrats.

“I was shocked when I heard her say that she thinks she’s done enough,” said NDP child care critic Claire Trevena. “The Campbell government is so arrogant and out of touch that they don’t even recognize the child care crisis that is having a devastating impact on families across the province.”

Reid made the assertion that her government has met the needs of the child care sector in response to a question Trevena asked in the Legislature Tuesday about the critical shortage of child care spaces in the Cowichan Valley.

Trevena pointed to Parkside Academy in Duncan, as an example of the government’s misplaced priorities.

“In March, I was at Parkside Academy in Duncan where child care spaces are in high demand. The Campbell government recently spent millions improving the school and now they want to close it down along with the infant toddler program,” said Trevena. “If Parkside closes it will have a huge impact on the community and businesses in the area as working parents struggle to find alternative care in the face of growing child care wait lists.”

“The child care crisis in the Cowichan Valley is an issue facing the entire province, yet this Minister continues to deny there is a problem at the expense of children and working families,” said Trevena.
