Foolish change in child care regulations

The daycare situation is impossible because every political level claims it is not its problem; municipalities blame the province, and the province blames Ottawa.

Here in Vancouver, Coun. Kim Capri proposes to spend $31 million on a new animal care facility -- money that would be better spent creating a new child care centre. The next municipal election is in November; tell political candidates you won't vote for them unless they commit to creating daycare spaces.

The Vancouver Park Board could provide space in parks for facilities … and city hall could fund the building costs through its capital plan.

Studies clearly show that for every dollar spent on quality child care, the government saves $7 for high-risk children, and $4 for low-risk children. Children are our future -- we must invest in them if we want healthy, productive citizens.
