It was an out-of-the-blue bonus for the Kelowna Community Food Bank, but the 1,067 pounds of food donated by the staff at Kelowna General Hospital was graciously accepted.
The food drive held April 20-26 was organized by the hospital housekeeping staff…
Diekert said news of that donation spurred locals into digging through their cupboards to provide more food.
"It was a wonderful thing, because that donation inspired other donors," said Diekert, adding the food bank hands out $6,000 worth of food each day.
"… at the end of the school year, children don't have access to the school food programs." Diekert said 40 per cent of the food bank's clients are children. Roughly half of the food bank clients are working, and Diekert said during the summer break those parents must find day care for their children, which dramatically cuts into their budget.
People can access the food bank once a month and leave with up to five days worth of food. Last year, the centre received some 28,000 visits.
