Daycare hardly a luxury

The Editor,

Re: "Parents, raise your own kids," News, April 22.

…. The people who are most adversely affected are ones like me, ones who would love nothing more than to pick our children up from school, to help them with their homework, to spend time with them in the morning or evening. But instead we HAVE to work, one, maybe two jobs. Often at minimum wage, and typically in industries where we don't get to pick our shifts or hours.

I've read more than one letter telling parents 'raise your own kids' or 'give up all the luxuries you are really working for.' It's really discouraging to constantly be looked over, not only by the government, but by people who apparently have no idea what it's like to struggle just to get by with daily needs. Rent, food and hydro are not luxuries, and those are the things that I am working for.
