Okanagan mayors discuss growth

When asked how they envision the future of their communities, the majority of Okanagan mayors made it clear that social issues are taking centre stage when it comes to city planning.
The mayors from Penticton, Summerland, Peachland, Westside, Lake Country, Vernon and Kelowna offered their varied opinions at a panel discussion hosted by the Urban Development Initiative on Friday in Kelowna.
When they were asked how they wanted to attract quality developments that meet various sustainability goals in their communities, one by one they each pointed out that they want developers to show them plans that foster further population growth in downtown cores as it would increase the vitality of their cities, and reduce the number of people reliant on cars. Issues such as child care were also noted repeatedly, as was anything that would lure young families to their cities….
