New budget fails women

The new federal budget fails to invest in Canadian women, said Vancouver Island North MP Catherine Bell in the House of Commons on Apr. 2.

"Canadian women are tired of being treated like afterthoughts by this Conservative government," said Bell. "Budget 2008 does virtually nothing for Canadian women struggling to balance work and family life."…

Bell said the government's heavy emphasis on tax cuts does not work for most women because their incomes are substantially lower than men's and they don't qualify.

"Women benefit most from investments in vital services such as affordable child care, housing, and tuition, but none of these appeared in the budget despite the availability of huge surpluses," said Bell.
