Thousands of Canadians currently blocked from finding employment could bolster Canada's economy if the federal government acts on a House of Commons committee report released yesterday, said Victoria MP Denise Savoie.

Mothers strapped by a daycare shortage, seniors blocked by mandatory retirement and disabled people restricted by a lack of equipment are just three examples of underemployed sectors of society, said Savoie, NDP deputy human resources advocate.

"With an economic downturn lurking over our shoulder, this report is a comprehensive blueprint for a strong, sustainable economy and a higher quality of life for everyday Canadians and their families," she added.

The two-year study took human resources committee MPs from all parties to seven cities to hear testimony from almost 200 witnesses.

Savoie said she canvassed Greater Victoria's Chamber of Commerce, tourism leaders, and employment and training agencies….

"Daycare is a huge issue in Victoria," Savoie said.

"How many folks are sitting 200th on a list for child care here?" Savoie asked. "They can't afford to go back to work because the cost in Victoria of $1,000 a month for child care is a lot."
