Students won't go hungry; School board will not cut lunch program for over 200 children

The New Westminster School District is facing a serious budget crunch, but that doesn't mean vulnerable students will go hungry.

Despite rising food costs, the board of education assured staff that the lunch program would be maintained, following a presentation from Janet Grant, director of instruction, and Betina Ali, program development officer, at a recent school board meeting.

"I would like to assure you that they will not be cutting this program," said trustee Lisa Graham.

"It's too important."

Graham illustrated the larger, city-wide issue of vulnerable children when she talked about a daycare centre in New Westminster, where a staff member told her she gives kids an extra meal on Friday afternoons because some of them won't get enough to eat on the weekend….
