The alternate school calendar was approved by the School District 27 board March 13 after some discussion.

The alternate calendar was established in the district five years ago in order for the district to deal with budget constraints resulting from falling enrollment and reduced funding from the Ministry of Education.

Nine instructional days were taken out of the regular school calendar and compensated for by extending each instructional day by 15 minutes.

For many rural schools the alternate calendar means closing schools on Fridays or only operating half a day on Fridays….

In discussion on whether to continue the alternate calendar trustee Steve Relkov, said he had been hearing concerns that the alternate calendars are causing problems for parents in finding day care on the non-instructional days.
