I am pleased the Commission to End Homelessness has been created, with members who have the authority to implement necessary policies and practices.

Here is my brief summary of the research on solutions:

First, build more affordable housing. Second, increase eligibility to adequate income through employment or social assistance. Third, expand residential and supportive services, especially to those with heavy caring responsibilities or challenged by ill health, mental illness, abuse, and addictions. Finally, for all citizens, increase the availability of safe community places, such as daycare and neighbourhood centres, as well as educational spaces, such as libraries and schools.

While waiting for the commission to do its work, however, public authorities need to act now. There are several immediate decisions required so the capital region does not lose supportive services and public spaces that currently exist. It is easier and cheaper to save what works, than to start again….
