Harper boosts military spending, announces bigger annual increases

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is boosting military spending with an automatic annual budget increase that will translate into hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade…
And one of his political opponents wondered why the everyday needs of Canadians, like child care and housing, don't get the same kind of indexed, inflation-protected spending as the army.
"They won't do the same for health care. They won't do the same for child care," said NDP defence critic Dawn Black.
"The situation in Canada now for working families finding child care is at a critical stage... We've spent billions on the war in Afghanistan and we still don't have a child-care program in this country.
"It really shows where the priorities of the Stephen Harper government are."…
