Businesses turn attention to seniors

Gaining the distinction of having one of the most rapidly aging populations in the country from Statistics Canada didn't' paint a very rosy picture for Kelowna's business community….

"It's amazing what Chambers of Commerce are getting into these days. What used to be social issues become business issues once it has an impact on child care," said Weldon LeBlanc CEO of the Chamber of Commerce.

"Child care becomes an issue when you can't get employees if they can't leave home because they can't get anyone to care after their children.

"Similarly it becomes an issue if people can't leave home because they have to take care of their parents."

LeBlanc said the changes in the labour market have been a long time coming, but in recent weeks they've been taking a closer look at what role they will play when it comes to dealing with the issue.

"We are looking at the education of businesses, and finding out how they will deal with the issues," he said.

"And over and above that, we need to discuss what areas to lobby government for to help."…
