GST cut means programs cut

Dear Editor,

In a recent column by Stockwell Day ("Battalions, borders and Boeing," Penticton Herald, Jan. 29) he says the two per cent GST cut is "money the previous government would have kept for itself." He couldn't be more wrong.

The cut represents billions of dollars that could have gone to clean up the environment and help with the climate change problem. It could have been spent on educating more desperately needed doctors and nurses to help with the health care problem. It could have gone to affordable housing and child care for working families.

Simply put, such ideologically-driven tax cutting inevitably results in the cutting of programs that do a great deal of good for all Canadians.
