College could expand program for parents

I am a 20-year-old single mother trying to make ends meet on social assistance while attending classes at Okanagan College.

The daycare that is provided on the Kelowna Secondary School campus is very wonderful and has the right amenities to assist my child's needs. However, they do not provide the necessary hours or age limits that I will require for the next semester.

Their age limit is three, and most parents (including myself) will need childcare until age five.

In the best interest of my toddler, I find that in order for her needs to be met, I will require a daycare that is open from 8 a.m. until at least 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. Although other options are available, they are not feasible because they either have a long waiting list or are completely out of my price range (even with a child-care subsidy).

In light of this, I feel that Okanagan College should propose a daycare to the provincial government. If the government and college approve the proposal, then not only will my daughter benefit, but children and their families will benefit for years to come.

I feel that if the community stands together and supports this proposal, the government will accept.
