The power of stupidity

… Stupid decisions, apparently, have serious consequences.
You would think that leaders subesquent to Chretien would have learned from his foolishness. That thoughtlessly ripping up legislation and deals of the previous government; is not wise nor prudent.
But, as my friend Andy Nita once said, 'never underestimate the power of stupidity'.
Subsequent to his election in early 2006, one of Stephen Harper's first acts was to destroy the hard work of Paul Martin, cancelling the $5 billion national day care program.
In hundreds of communities across Canada, including towns in the Elk Valley, millions of parents are now struggling to find adequate day care for their children. The Conservatives 'plan' to hand over cash to parents and magically create day care spaces is not working. And everyone knows it.
"The Tories have not delivered a single one of the 125,000 child care spaces they promised," said Morna Ballantyne, of Code Blue for Child Care, bluntly stating the obvious.
Nonetheless, in the grand political tradition of devising a foolish policy and sticking to it; the Tories have now set the 'stupid button' on 'accelerate'.
In last week's Throne Speech, the Tories vowed to stop interfering in areas of provincial jurisdiction, which essentially means they won't be spending money on national social programs. Because as every wise citizen knows, national standards for health care, education and child care, are nothing but destructive socialist plots.
What remains to be seen, is how far the public will allow Harper to go and how far he'll take us astray.
On the plus side, we can all look forward to 2020, when we will see the full consequences of Harper's malevolence.
