Parents rallying at SFU Burnaby campus

BURNABY/CKNW (AM980) - Parents who rely on the SFU childcare society are rallying today the university's Burnaby campus.

Unionized workers have been on strike since September 17, causing inconvenience to the more than 260 families who use the society for daycare.

Chris Mullen with the BCGEU, the union representing the workers, says wages and funding are the primary issues.

"The fees that parents pay for childcare spaces will never be able to pay a decent living wage to professional early childhood educators with post secondary education and the responsibility that they have."

Mullen says the provincial and federal governments have cut funding and wages haven't kept pace with inflation.

The top salary at the childcare society is about $31,000 a year.
