Simon Fraser University parents will hold a rally Wednesday to demand funding for the school's troubled day care.

Jinko Graham, a parent and instructor at SFU, said parents want federal, provincial and civic cash to end the child-care worker strike, now entering its third week.

"It will raise public awareness, and it can't hurt," Graham said, adding parents organized the rally with the day care's board.

Workers at SFU Childcare Society have been on strike since Sept. 17, leaving 260 families scrambling to find day care.

The rally will also show support for the 67 striking workers, who are like family to many of the parents, Graham said.

Workers have said they want pensions and higher wages, while management says the society will have to raise fees or go bankrupt to meet workers' demands.

The society has suffered from provincial and federal government funding cuts, Graham said.

"I think everyone is fundamentally on the same side.

"The strike is really hard on us emotionally."

Last week, society director Pat Frouws said both the province and Simon Fraser University turned down her request for emergency funding.

The City of Burnaby has also denied the society's funding request…

The rally happens 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the tennis courts outside SFU Childcare Society….
