Students and staff at Simon Fraser University who rely on the university's child care centre will have to find other options starting Monday.

67 unionized workers represented by the BCGEU plan to start a full-scale strike after holding rotating walk outs since strike notice was issued back in July.

Union president George Heyman says he was hoping the employer would accept a proposal 2.5 percent wage increase for the first year.

He says at $16.24/hour, the childcare workers are "significantly underpaid."

"You cannot do that. When somebody working at Tim Horton’s in Fort St John can make more money than an early childhood educator who's gone to school to achieve a certificate, something is seriously flawed with our value system and our compensation system."

The strike affects about 250 families in the university community.
