Vancouver parents may be forced to bear the brunt of Vancouver's civic strike when school resumes today.

Community centres and the childcare programs they house - like the one at the Britannia Community Centre - are still behind picket lines as the strike enters its seventh week.

Vancouver School Board trustee and child-care advocate Sharon Gregson says that could leave many unsuspecting families with nowhere to go.

"Many families are not going to realize just how much child services have been affected until their kids go back to school this week," said Gregson. "School will still be the same, but there will be no before- and after-school programs at community centres for children to go to. That's when they'll feel the full impact of the strike."

With many private child-care providers already running at full capacity, it adds up to a big headache for working parents.

"Unfortunately, there isn't one phone number that parents can call to find a place for their children," said Gregson, who has accused the provincial government of neglecting childcare. "If anything, it just shows the lack of child care there is in this province."
