Two mothers say they need day care expansion not extensions

Two mothers who rely on the Raycam Community Centre for support say extending the essential service designation will only help them if restrictions are lifted on the daycare.

Marilyn McKee says her eight year old son is not one of 15 special needs kids currently allowed to stay at the centre.

"It only leaves the seats that are already being taken open, so it still leaves parents and families vulnerable, so unless they fully open up the centre, its not going to do the community any good. We’re still going to be in the same situation."

Diane Johnston says her daughter is also at home with her.

"It’s kind of heartbreaking because all I hear from her all the time is 'am I going to day care today mummy?' and I have to tell her no. she just gets all upset about it."

Johnston is recovering from a car crash last month and McKee has taken time off work to stay at home with her son and offer support to other families needing daycare.

City officials have confirmed the 1pm LRB hearing is still going ahead because they want the existing essential services expanded...not just extended.
