New Democrats are holding true to their "thanks but no thanks" stand over MLAs' compensation right through the detailed implementation of the package.

But the Liberals are bound and determined to make the 33-member Opposition caucus enjoy at least some of the benefits, no matter how often they vote against it… Like the salary recommendation -- $76,100 to $98,000, plus assorted stipends -- that got so much attention earlier, the capital-city living allowance will be increased, although it's dependent on a number of variables. And like the pay hike, it will be imposed on the Opposition members whether they like it or not. (Most New Democrats have announced they are giving the raise the charity.)

It's the absurdity of this situation that makes it so enchanting. Only in B.C. would the government jam improved salary and benefits down the protesting throats of their political opponents….

That group is supposed to report on the feasibility of maternity/paternal leave and setting up some child-care supports by next January.

The panel was obviously sympathetic to the idea….
