Rise in poverty 'troubling'

British Columbians enjoy better health and live longer than
their neighbours elsewhere in the northwest. But a study of
Cascadia -- the Pacific northwest region stretching from southern
Alaska to northern California -- shows poverty levels in B.C.
went up slightly, while they declined or levelled off in the
northwest U.S. states. Child poverty levels in B.C. also went
up, from just over 18 per cent in 1990 to more than 20 per
cent in 2005.
"That's troubling," said Clark Williams-Derry, research
director with the Sightline Institute, a non-profit think-tank
based in Seattle. It also bucks the national trend in the
rest of Canada, where overall poverty decreased, he said....
