New housing developments in West Vancouver should be accompanied with space or money for child care, says Joanne McKenna, chairwoman of the district's child-care services working group.

Rogers West development ... were all targeted as opportunities to push for space or money towards child care spots.

Even though the ... development is underway, McKenna says the cash contributions that are a part of the amenities could be spent on creating child-care space.

More space is preferable to money though, McKenna added, because it is in especially dire need.

"There is an opportunity on this one level, through West Vancouver's public amenity policy, to include child care in the range of amenities that could be provided for in the range of new developments either through onsite space or through cash contributions directed to create or enhance day care elsewhere," said McKenna in a presentation to West Vancouver council on May 28.

The working group, with council and public representatives, will present their full findings and recommendations to council later this year.
