View Royal aiming to cut day care moms a break

Moms who can't get out of the house to take a job because there's a lack of affordable day care might soon get a break from View Royal.

When Coun. Andrew Britton examined the Town's bylaw that limits home-based child care operators to taking care of five youngsters, he decided to ask council for an amendment to increase that number.

"There's a need for more affordable day care," he said at Tuesday's council meeting.

Hiking the number to seven children means operators require a provincial day care licence, council was told by staff.

And once an operator is licensed, a residential property providing the service must be rezoned as "institutional" -- complete with a rezoning public hearing.

Council wasn't put off and told staff to compare the Town's regulations with provincial laws with an eye towards a compromise that would help parents needing affordable care.
