People with no voice losing services they need

THE EDITOR:

It would seem that our cherished social safety net is being systematically dismantled in this province.

Services for children, for old people and for families do not appear to have any real priority with the current government.

The media has been full of announcements of cuts due to underfunding: child care agencies, to sexual abuse counselling agencies (Mary Manning), to community non-profit agencies (Nanaimo Family Life Association) and to care homes for the elderly (Nanaimo Seniors Village).

What is the common denominator here?

These are services provided to people with little or no voice.

Families of those served put their energies into helping their loved ones get the help they need, and have limited energy to make noise about the injustice of what is happening.

Are we really going to sit back and watch our most vulnerable citizens be left to struggle by themselves?
