Govt. closes centres

Minister of Family and Child Development Linda Reid appears to have reversed course.

A week ago, the minister put $5 million back in the 2007 budget for child care, after having lopped $11 million off last year's total of $14 million.

The government decided last Friday to close the Child Care Resource and Referral Centres (CCRRCs) in Kitimat, Langley and Gibsons.

The Vancouver CCRRC will have its budget cut by one-third.

CCRRCs in Richmond and Elk Valley have already been closed.

Reid's announcement of the closures was not made publicly, but by conference call to the affected CCRRCs late Friday afternoon.
