Canada's rich don't need universal childcare

Dear editor

Many people say we need universal childcare. I believe universal childcare means any family, whether rich or poor, should be entitled to full coverage for their children. This idea is too far left in the political spectrum to suit me. Universal childcare is a concept in which the state becomes responsible for raising our children -- a frightening thought.

I would envision a three-tiered system: those who cannot afford childcare must be fully subsidized; those who can afford to pay part of the cost must do so and the balance be subsidized; those who can afford to pay for childcare must pay all of the costs.

I hear the cry "Hey Wilf, it sounds like you are referring to a means test!" Well, I certainly am, I see no reason why I should pay one penny in taxes to support childcare for the rich and famous.
