VICTORIA - The B.C. Liberals are putting the future of childcare at risk, says Opposition Critic for Childcare and MLA for North Island Claire Trevena.

Trevena's statement comes in the wake of a letter to childcare providers from the Minister of State Responsible, Linda Reid, which warns of funding cuts.

Trevena said the letter confirms that the B.C. Liberal government continues to refuse to stand up for families.

"This gives childcare operators no option but to raise their fees or close their doors," said Trevena. "Parents will try to find the extra money to cover an increase in fees, but for many that is going to be difficult, or simply not possible.

"Childcare providers have been looking for a comprehensive plan for provincial childcare, and instead the government has dismissed this essential service," said Trevena. "Minister Reid and the B.C. Liberals sat back and watched as the Harper government gutted federal funding."

Trevena said that the province must provide for high quality childcare which offers a good start for children and allows parents to stay in the workforce.

"The B.C. Liberal government is cutting funding to existing childcare programs," said Trevena. "And, to add insult to injury, the Minister was also clear that any increase in childcare won't get any additional provincial funding.

"A vision for childcare must include all parents and all children, and should include diversity of providers," said Trevena. "That means providing high quality, accessible childcare for all B.C.'s children..."
