EXCERPT

As the year 2006 wraps up and we look forward to 2007, I decided to take some time to ponder the last two years and think about the next two. It has been almost two years since the 2005 election and it will be just over two until the next one in 2009.

I am often asked if I like the job or if I am happy I changed careers and the answer is always "yes".

It has been exciting but also incredibly frustrating.

I have dealt with issues affecting you, my constituents, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. I wish we could help you solve all problems but, unfortunately, that just isn't realistic.

I thought I would share a wish list of things I would like to see happen in our constituency of West Kootenay Boundary.

In no particular order:

2. Minimum wage increases and an increase to social assistance rates that reflects the cost of living;

3. Affordable housing that meets the needs of those accessing it;

7. Enough child care spaces to provide an early childhood experience that is high quality, affordable and publicly supported, while ensuring those who work in the field receive wages and benefits suitable to their profession; I know that some of these goals are difficult to achieve, while others are very much within reach.

It takes political will and commitment to ensure there is funding dedicated. Not enough workers, not enough child care - coincidence?
